The Bi-on air purification system has been shown to successfully remove Ethylene from CA apple stores with tests providing excellent results for Bramley apples stored in low Oxygen.
The Bi-On system uses specially formulated zeolite clays impregnated with potassium permanganate giving a capacity to adsorb more than 3 times the amount of ethylene than traditional ethylene control systems.
Not only does the system adsorb the ethylene produced by the fruit but it also cleans the air adsorbing odours, pathogens, mould and rot spores.
The material is housed in disposable cartridges which are positioned within the CA store in the direct air stream of the cooling fans. Trials have shown satisfactory operation with off peak cooling and short periods of fan operation during the day.
It is essential that ethylene removal starts at the begining of the storage period to prevent the fruit using its own ethylene in an autocatalytic process.
The ethylene in store can be measured with analysers and sensing systems available from ICA to check for ethylene activity within the store.
